Production Design
Production Design
Production design is perhaps the most important stage in a packaging design project. Turning artwork into a printable package design takes years of knowledge and experience. With over 20 years of experience in production design, I am a master at preparing files for print and working with print vendors to realize the designer’s original vision.
The key to being a successful production designer is having an in-depth understanding of how your package will be printed. Knowing the limitations of various printing methods, such as flexo, offset, or digital, is key to preparing print-ready files. It is also necessary for the production designer to understand how the pre-press department will prepare your files for print. Understanding the difference between conventional and non-conventional screening allows the production designer to instruct the pre-press department on how to achieve the client’s desired results.
3D Modeling
Using advanced 3D modeling software, my clients are able to pre-visualize what their packaging will look like when the box or folding carton is assembled. This is critical for designing complex folding cartons, where graphics are placed across two panels that are glued together (crossover), or if you are trying to achieve a billboard effect with multiple cartons.
Color Separations
Many print vendors charge extra if your production files aren’t properly color-separated. To avoid additional fees and to make sure all deadlines are met, it is often to your advantage to have the production designer perform the color separations. Utilizing industry-standard software, accurate color separations are provided along with all production files.
Digital Printing
Advances in digital can printing are making huge waves in the beverage industry. No longer does a beverage company need to order a truckload of cans to produce a direct-to-aluminum printed can. Companies are now able to order small quantities of printed cans with the look and feel of a major national brand. Matte and gloss varnish can be applied to specific areas of the can by creating a custom varnish layer. Similarly, Metal BOPP labels provide an affordable printed label option with custom spot varnish and knockout areas where the metal label shines thru.
